REVIEWS
"It’s absolutely amazing how much power local singer/songwriter Jen Stevens can generate with just voice and piano. And when I say power, I don’t mean just belting stuff out at the top of her lungs (her vocals are as clear as a mountain stream). She creates swelling ballads through sheer force of melody, as well as lyrical concerns that sift through the vagaries of love, loss and redemption. This is her debut solo album (she’s previously done sterling work with her band Jen Stevens & The Hiccups) and fans of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Beccy Owen will find plenty to love here."

"Bereavement has always provided a deep and rich well of expression throughout the history of art, and Neptune’s Daughter is no exception. Much like her powerful recent release She Sleeps, Jen Stevens has translated the pain felt by loss into compelling works of emotional depth.
There is a constant undertow of optimism and acceptance in the powerful and rich imagery that the South Shields-based singer/songwriter paints, immediately calling to mind Kate Bush in her buoyant command of melody and harmony, and in the sheer versatility of the arrangement, which never stays in the same place for too long, mirroring the depth and urgency of the lyrics. All in all, it’s a profound and compelling masterpiece of song."

"Award-winning North East singer-songwriter Jen Stevens has returned with the release of her brand new single.
‘She Sleeps’ is the anthemic, chilled, pop-enthused follow up to previous single, ‘We Do It Right’, which hit number one in the ITunes songwriter chart.
Taking inspiration from powerful female songwriters including Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos and powerhouse Kate Bush, Jen’s latest single features over 100 vocal tracks as well as piano, trumpet and synth all performed and produced solely by the talented songstress.
Lyrically, the track is deeply emotive, raw and meaningful, with poetry by Jen’s later mother interwoven in the track as though it is written as a conversation between a mother and daughter; making it an extremely heartfelt listen that captures her thoughts and feelings during her time of bereavement.
Vocally, her range is equally as impressive as it is beautiful, helping capture the rawness of her feelings and experiences as well as complementing the laid-back acoustic style of the track perfectly.
You can listen to ‘She Sleeps’ now on all major streaming platforms."
